Locksmith Opens New Location in Akron

A longtime Akron locksmith is opening at a new location. J.R. Shoup LLC has been in business for 105 years. The locksmith business is relocating to Market Court on West Market Street.

Their previous location was next to the Children’s Hospital campus on West Exchange Street. The hospital is acquiring the property for the old location.

The new location is a little larger and should be easy for JR Shoup’s customers to adapt to. The locksmith places a high priority on customer service. Jan Harrington is the current owner and president. She enjoys some of the challenges that the business brings, like finding parts for aging buildings.

It was Harrington’s ex-husband’s grandfather who founded the business in 1908. The business stayed at the original location until 1942. Harrington and her husband at the time bought the business in 1988. After their divorce Harrington received the business in the settlement and began the journey of educating herself on the industry. She has stayed current with industry developments, making sure her company sells and services the latest products like electronics and keypads. The company provides service to approximately 1,000 primarily commercial customers.
